"How to seize the day"

This is strange times indeed and it’s easy to get stuck worrying about the future. Eva Holmquist from Sogeti Labs wants to take this opportunity to encourage you to seize the day. Apart from being a disastrous event, the pandemic allows us to re-create what we’re doing in our business and in this blogpost Eva explains how.

The digitization takes a big leap in the shadow of the pandemic. We should all think about what steps we can take to go further on our digitization journey. Five areas are important to consider:

  1. New ideas
  2. Product
  3. Service
  4. Business Model
  5. Quality Assurance

I will go through all five of them and explain my thoughts on the matter. Hopefully, this catalyzes your thoughts.

New ideas

One positive aspect of the pandemic is that there are a lot of institutions and individuals sharing their knowledge online. I like the open window approach when it comes to knowledge. If we share knowledge, we also gain knowledge. If we’re only looking at knowledge from within our business, we probably wouldn’t be able to re-create. Therefore, I think it’s necessary to learn more. All these free webinars give us ample opportunity to do just that
One example that I recommend is the MIT which has a lot of webinars around digitization and future technology, see https://ilp.mit.edu/.
Another example is here at Sogeti Labs there you get new knowledge and inspiration from blog posts and the reports we prepare for you, see https://labs.sogeti.com/.
I encourage you to plan for a couple of hours each week to gain new insights through reading articles or watching webinars. You should also plan for an hour each week to brainstorm new ideas based on what you learned.

Product

This pandemic has and will change the use of our products. We need to be a step ahead and think about how our products need to change and what new products there will be a need for. For instance, I think that there will be a bigger demand for touchless functionality.

Service

A lot of companies have added services to their business, fulfilling the changing needs. For instance, there are hotels offering office space for remote working. Delivering services that deliver to your footstep have been more prominent and with more choices. All businesses have service opportunities that haven’t been exploited. This is the time to change that. What does your customer need that you can fulfill, but don’t at this moment? What new needs have arisen that you think will prevail?

Business Model

This is also the time to look at our business model. It’s easy to get stuck on, this is the way we’ve always done business. The world is changing rapidly and that means that we need to change the way we do business as well.
One big trend that everybody should consider, is the move from product to service. The customer wants the service of transport, rather than buying a car. The subscription model is getting big. What does this trend imply for your business?

Quality Assurance

You didn’t think, I would forget about the quality assurance, did you? I do work with quality assurance and testing. Well, this topic wasn’t included just because I work with it. It’s included because of the importance and because a lot of companies forget about it.
This is the time to re-create our products, services, and business model. We also need to make sure that they are working as expected.

Another aspect of quality assurance is that it’s changed a lot. For instance, regarding Test Environment Management, Test Automation, and the use of Artificial Intelligence to support quality assurance. Take advantage of the knowledge within this area as well and make sure that your quality assurance is as efficient as possible.

Conclusion

The world is moving at an accelerated pace. We’re also experiencing a pandemic that will change how we live. Seize the day and use this time to re-create your business. Take the time to learn about digitization, new technology, new business models, and new needs from your customers. Brainstorm ideas regularly and look at how you can re-create products, services, and business models. And last, don’t forget to make sure they work as expected by efficient quality assurance.  And if you want to discuss this further, feel free to contact me!
