Creating value with IoT

Sogeti has developed several PoCs (Proof-Of-Concepts) in the area of IoT. The goal of the PoCs is to demonstrate our understanding of various technology components involved in the IoT ecosystem at all its conceptual layers e.g. sensor, edge, network/application servers and presentation platforms.

As part of this goal Sogeti is also planning to develop a platform called SgIoT that helps customers connect the sensors to application. This is just one option of the possible solutions. The SgIoT option helps further to build a custom solution depending on customer’s needs, this eliminates need to pay for any 3rd party license fee. Other than the custom solution, Sogeti can also help integrating the solution using standard 3rd party IoT platforms. Sogeti PoCs are aimed to cover various aspects of the ecosystem.

An overview of the IoT Ecosystem 

Layer 1 – Sensors:
This layer involves sensing circuitry to sense some fundamental physical entity, such as, temperature, things (people, animal, dustbin, etc.), pressure, moisture, etc. This involves some wiring as well as some smart devices which aggregate the data and send it over an industry standard protocol, such as MODBUS. Sogeti helps in identifying right sensors and network solution for the system.

Layer 2 – Edge:
This layer involves collecting data from previous layer and connecting to internet via a gateway device. This has several connectivity options, such as LoRa, NBIoT, Wifi, Bluetooth, GSM, etc. So, it caters to different needs of low and high bandwidth scenarios. Sogeti can help in identifying and configuring various Edge networks that are suitable for the solution.

Layer 3 – Network and Application Server:
This is an infrastructure provided by network providers, this is responsible for encryption/decryption, routing, etc. The application layer provides a means (API) to deliver the payload to consumer applications.

Layer 4 – Presentation:
This layer involves a range of simple to complex applications, simple data presentation to algorithms, data analytics, etc. There are many standard platforms available for data presentation such as Ubidots, Microsoft Azure, AWS IoT Core, ThingPark, to name few. Sogeti can help in complete end-to-end solution using 3rd party tools ranging from data analytics, presentation and integrating into work flow management.

5 concrete PoC examples 

Let us inspire you with five use cases that you can quickly implement into your operations. They can also fuel ideas that we can swiftly turn into reality based on our IoT platform.  

PoC #1 – Smart Parking Solution

Ultrasonic sensors detect the presence of car/vehicle in a parking spot and sends this information over LoRa to SgIoT platform (Sogeti IoT platform). The platform analyzes data and provide the parking status in near time on a web page. This webpage may be accessed from various devices connected to internet. It is possible to view the historic data.


PoC #2 – Asset Tracker using NBIoT

A tracker device that runs on NBIoT sends GPS coordinates to SgIoT platform. The platform uses coordinates and plots it on a geographic map. The application may be access from any device that is connected to internet. A control relay driven by NBIoT is used to turn on the remote heater on demand. The user logs-in to the application and touches the On/Off button to control the remote heater.


PoC #3 – IoT based Smart building

Sensors are attached to pipeline that detect water flow. This information is processed by SgIoT to detect the blockage. The lighting circuit in a smart building is powered using PoE or a traditional wiring is retrofitted with control relays. Using the application running on SgIoT, its is possible to control the lamps. Using things sensors, it is possible to count the number of people that are passing through a door or a frame, and additional sensors are used to determine the direction.


PoC #4 – Vibrations Measurement

Accelerometers are used to determine the vibrations in all 3 directions. The accelerometer data is processed by local device to compute daily average and peak. This information is periodically sent to SgIoT over LoRa. SgIoT presents the data in the form of a bar or line charts. Based on this data, certain alerts are generated.


PoC #5 – Cable break indicator, lamp control

A set of current sensors/ voltage sensors are used in the streetlight wiring and electric poles. Additionally accelerometers are used to determine the pole angle. SgIoT processes the information and provide the location of fault, various health information on the UI. It also controls the lamps based on schedule/ user input.
